Ian DE VAZ

Ian De Vaz is the Head of the Infrastructure, Construction & Engineering Practice and a Partner in the International Arbitration and Middle East Practices, specialising in construction law. He is one of Singapore's most recognised construction lawyers, serving as a Senior Accredited Specialist in Building and Construction Law appointed by the Singapore Academy of Law, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FCIArb), and a Senior Adjudicator appointed under the Building and Construction Industry Security of Payment Act. He has been a Professor in the Faculty of Law, NUS since 2004.

He has appeared as lead counsel in the Court of Appeal and High Court on enforceability and setting aside of adjudication determinations and arbitral awards, and has handled issues on delay and disruption, extension of time, liquidated damages, defective works, and termination of contracts in both international and domestic construction arbitrations. He has particular expertise in land reclamation, infilling and soil improvement work, environmental engineering, railway projects, and workplace safety matters. He has advised on, served as an adjudicator, and acted as counsel in more than 100 adjudications, and is regularly nominated to sit as arbitrator in SIAC and BANI arbitrations. He is Co‑Chairperson of the Law Society of Singapore's Building & Construction Law Committee, a member of the inaugural International Statutory Adjudication Forum (ISAF), and serves on the Construction Adjudication Accreditation Committee (CAAC) of the Singapore Mediation Centre.

Ian holds an LL.B. (Hons) from the National University of Singapore and an LL.M. from University College London (with Distinction in International Construction – Contracts and Arbitration). He is admitted to the Singapore Bar and to the Roll of Solicitors of England & Wales.
