Tan Kai Liang

Tan Kai Liang is a Partner at Allen & Gledhill LLP, specialising in arbitration and mediation. He is the Deputy Co‑Head of the firm's International Arbitration Practice and Co‑Head of the firm's Technology Disputes Practice. He has extensive experience advising on corporate disputes relating to joint ventures, shareholders' disputes, share subscriptions, investment and development agreements, and all manners of litigation arising from mergers and acquisitions.

He has acted for a Fortune 500 technology company in an IT contract dispute against a statutory board in excess of S$1 billion, successfully defended a former chief executive officer in a S$1.6 billion conspiracy claim, and represented various Indonesian mine owners in a US$50 million SIAC arbitration over a coal mine in South Kalimantan. He has also represented clients in complex international arbitration proceedings, including acting for a leading offshore construction service provider in an ad hoc arbitration against the Government of Maldives, and acted for a fully licensed digital bank in Singapore in a major fraud claim, securing a worldwide Mareva injunction. He regularly handles high‑profile corporate investigations concerning employee misconduct, fraud, corruption and other corporate governance breaches, and has acted for regulators and listed companies on market misconduct and market manipulation matters.

Tan Kai Liang holds an LL.M. from Harvard Law School (Kathryn Aguirre Worth Memorial Scholarship) and an LL.B. (Hons) (First Class) from the National University of Singapore, where he was awarded the Law Society of Singapore Book Prize and the Shook Lin & Bok Prize. He is a published co‑author of the Singapore Chapter in International Commercial Arbitration: International Conventions, Country Reports and Comparative Analysis (CH Beck, Hart & Nomos, 3rd edition).

He is ranked as a leading individual and litigation star in The Legal 500 Asia‑Pacific, Lexology Index, and Benchmark Litigation, and has been described as a "superb" litigator, a "strong advocate" who is "incredibly smart," "one of the best," and "absolutely top‑drawer." He previously served as an Assistant Registrar and Senior Justices' Law Clerk to the Chief Justice and Judges of Appeal of the Supreme Court of Singapore, and was an adjunct faculty member at Singapore Management University and the National University of Singapore.
