Tze Siong Ang

Tze Siong Ang is Counsel at A&O Shearman in Singapore, focusing on Arbitration and Mediation. He advises and represents clients in both international commercial arbitrations and investor-State disputes, on both the investor side and State side, in Asia Pacific and South-East Asia, particularly Singapore, Vietnam, the Philippines and Malaysia.

He has particular expertise in multi-jurisdiction, high-value and complex disputes involving large energy and telecommunications projects, private equity investments, M&A deals and joint ventures, complex financial arrangements, and insurance arrangements including bancassurance. He has appeared in arbitrations, including as an advocate, under a wide range of arbitration rules, including SIAC, HKIAC, ICC, UNCITRAL, ICSID and AAA.

His representative matters include advising two global energy companies on two disputes relating to two oil blocks in a South-East Asian State under ICC and UNCITRAL Rules respectively, with the amount in dispute exceeding US$2 billion; acting for Shell (formerly BG and Reliance) in arbitration proceedings exceeding US$5 billion commenced under the UNCITRAL Rules against the Government of India arising out of two production sharing contracts, and advising on related court proceedings; advising the Government of a Southeast Asian State on the defence of an investment treaty arbitration brought by a Korean investor concerning a real estate investment, with over US$250 million in dispute; acting for a global telecommunications company in an investment treaty arbitration against a South-East Asian State, with the amount in dispute exceeding US$1.8 billion; acting for a South-East Asian telecommunications company in a Singapore-seated SIAC arbitration arising out of an investment in a Francophone African country, with over US$800 million in dispute; acting for three private equity funds in a Hong Kong-seated HKIAC arbitration concerning a RMB 1.2 billion shareholder dispute over a hydropower business in the PRC; and acting for an international banking group in a Singapore-seated SIAC arbitration arising from a US$860 million financing arrangement for a construction project in Bangladesh.

Tze Siong is a frequent speaker at arbitration-related events and seminars for high-value clients, and is a committee member of the CIArb (Singapore) Young Member’s Group. Before joining A&O Shearman, he clerked for the Supreme Court of Singapore under both High Court and Court of Appeal judges, including the Chief Justice.
