Afzal Ali

Afzal Ali is a Partner at Allen & Gledhill LLP, specialising in arbitration and mediation. His main areas of practice include complex corporate and commercial litigation, international arbitration, and high‑profile corporate investigations. He has a particular focus on shareholder and joint venture disputes, share and business acquisition disputes, trust and fiduciary‑related disputes, high‑net‑worth banking disputes, IT and technology disputes, and libel claims. He has appeared as lead counsel in the General Division of the High Court, Appellate Division, and the Court of Appeal.

He has represented a professional trust company in a claim brought by the ex‑Prime Minister of Georgia over a trust fund in excess of US$800 million, represented the majority shareholders in a shareholder dispute over a leading family‑owned beverage manufacturer, and represented a foreign bank in claims over letters of credit issued in excess of US$100 million. He also acted for SingHealth in the Committee of Inquiry convened to investigate Singapore’s largest cyberattack and data breach, and acted in investigations related to Singapore’s largest money laundering case. He also has a cybersecurity practice, advising victims of cyberattacks and representing clients in regulatory investigations arising out of data exfiltration.

Afzal holds an LL.B. (First Class) from the National University of Singapore (2014), where he won academic prizes in Contract Law, Tort Law, Company Law, and Equity & Trusts, and an LL.M. from New York University (2014). He was admitted to the Singapore Bar in 2017 and to the New York State Bar in 2020. Prior to joining private practice, he served as a deputy public prosecutor with the Attorney‑General's Chambers and as a justices' law clerk to the Chief Justice and judges of the Singapore Supreme Court.

In 2025, he received the Joseph Grimberg Outstanding Young Advocate Award, a distinction awarded to only the most talented young lawyers in Singapore, for his exceptional advocacy, professional accomplishments, and dedication to the highest standards of practice.
