Erik Widjaja

Erik Widjaja is a Partner at Allen & Gledhill, specialising in maritime law, international arbitration, international trade, and litigation. He handles matters relating to maritime collisions, cargo claims, bills of lading, trade finance, international sale of goods, ship repair and construction, ship sale and purchase, charterparties, mortgage enforcement, insurance, and ship management. He regularly appears before the Singapore High Court and has handled numerous institutional and ad-hoc arbitrations, including those administered by SIAC, HKIAC, ICC, and under the LMAA and SCMA rules.

Erik has acted for an Indonesian cement producer in a claim against a ship for mis-delivery without production of original bills of lading, successfully arresting the ship and obtaining judgment and payment in China; for an Indonesian shipowner on a series of shipbuilding contracts with a Chinese shipyard; for a Chinese shipyard in an SIAC arbitration concerning a jack-up rig construction dispute, subsequent court applications for setting aside, and a fresh arbitration; for Indonesian state-owned companies in an SIAC arbitration exceeding US$1 billion in relation to a floating storage regassification unit dispute; and for a Chinese state-owned oil and gas company in proceedings before the Singapore High Court and SICC. He is effectively trilingual in English, Chinese, and Bahasa Indonesia.

Erik holds an LL.B. (Hons) from the National University of Singapore (2012), where he was awarded the M Karthigesu Memorial Gold Medal and Prize. He was called to the Singapore Bar in 2013 and is an Accredited Specialist in Maritime and Shipping Law by the Singapore Academy of Law, and a Fellow of the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators.

He is rated as a Future Star in Shipping by Benchmark Litigation, a recommended lawyer by Lexology Index for Shipping (Southeast Asia), and was listed in Benchmark Litigation Asia-Pacific's Top 40 Under 40 (2024, 2025). He has contributed to the commentary on Order 70 of the Rules of Court in the Singapore Court Practice 2014 and is a member of the advisory board to the NUS Centre for Maritime Law.
