Kenny Yap

Kenny Yap is a Partner and Co-Head of the Firm's International Trade Practice and Maritime & Aviation Practice at Allen & Gledhill, specialising in maritime law, international trade, and shipping disputes. He is also Co-Head of the Shipping (Contentious) team and handles both contentious and non-contentious work across the full spectrum of trade and shipping matters.

Kenny has acted on a wide variety of litigation and arbitration disputes, including trade and commodities disputes, customs and letters of credit disputes, mortgage enforcement, charterparty disputes, shipbuilding and repair disputes, ship sale and purchase disputes, cargo claims, bunker claims, maritime fraud claims, shipping casualty matters, insurance, and insolvency. He has advised a Singapore trading arm of an Indian conglomerate on a claim arising from a coal shipment dispute; a Chinese bank on ship arrest proceedings for mortgage enforcement; and a shipyard in an ICC arbitration concerning an FSO conversion project. On the non-contentious side, he advises on trade licensing, customs, import and export, sanctions, export control, and documentation for all types of trade, shipping, marine construction, and offshore services contracts.

Kenny holds a B.A., M.A., and LL.M. from the University of Cambridge (Trinity College). He was called to the Bar of England and Wales (Middle Temple) in 1991 and to the Singapore Bar in 1993. He joined Allen & Gledhill in 1993 and became a Partner in 2000.

He was named one of the Top 10 Maritime Lawyers globally by Lloyd's List in 2023 and is listed as a Global Elite Thought Leader for Transport – Shipping by Lexology Index and a Litigation Star by Benchmark Litigation. He is a Senior Accredited Specialist in Maritime and Shipping Law by the Singapore Academy of Law, a Fellow of the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators (SIArb), and a member of the panel of arbitrators for the SCMA, SIArb, and AIAC. He is also an Associate Mediator with the Singapore Mediation Centre.
