Tay Yong Seng

Tay Yong Seng is a Partner at Allen & Gledhill LLP, specialising in dispute resolution, with a focus on commercial litigation, international arbitration, and employment law. He acts as lead counsel in a broad spectrum of commercial disputes for global financial institutions, leading multinational companies, and government bodies. He is recognised as a leading lawyer by Chambers, The Legal 500, Lexology Index, and Benchmark Litigation in the fields of commercial litigation, international arbitration and employment, and was shortlisted for Singapore Lawyer of the Year by Benchmark Litigation Asia Pacific for 2023.

He has successfully argued numerous landmark decisions, including a 5‑Judge Court of Appeal decision on defamation, a leading Court of Appeal decision on company and insolvency law, and Singapore’s first successful civil action under the Personal Data Protection Act 2012. He has acted for top-tier financial institutions and trading companies including BGC Partners, Itochu, and Maersk in complex litigation that pushed the boundaries of Singapore law, and has represented leading manufacturers in high-stakes international arbitrations involving power generation, renewable energy, heavy industries, and product liability, successfully defending claims valued in excess of USD 120 million and USD 30 million. He has also defended arbitration awards in the Singapore High Court against setting‑aside challenges, including a leading case featured in Global Arbitration Review and Kluwer.

Tay Yong Seng holds a B.A. (Hons) in Law (converted to M.A. in 2013) and a B.C.L. from the University of Oxford (Pembroke College), where he was an Exhibitioner and a College Book Prize winner. He was admitted to the Singapore Bar in 2006. He serves as Adjunct Faculty at Singapore Management University, teaching Commercial Remedies in Litigation, and as Subject Editor for SAL Practitioner (Employment Law) and Co‑Editor of the SAL Annual Review of Singapore Cases (Equity and Trusts). He is also Honorary Legal Adviser to the Singapore Table Tennis Association.
