Daren Shiau, BBM, PBM

Daren Shiau, BBM, PBM, is a Partner and Co-Head of the Corporate & Commercial Department at Allen & Gledhill, specialising in competition law, foreign investment review, and mergers and acquisitions. He is a pioneering regional competition law and foreign investments specialist and concurrently Regional Co-Head of the Firm's Competition & Foreign Investment Review Practice, covering antitrust litigation, international cartels, monopolies and dominance, foreign investment screening, and global merger control.

Daren has led a predominant majority of Singapore's merger control cases, including the majority of all complex Phase 2 Reviews, such as Grab/Uber, Siemens/Alstom, Thomson/Reuters, Holcim/Lafarge, Western Digital/SanDisk, GlobalWafers/Siltronic, AMD/Xilinx, and Hyundai Heavy/Daewoo Shipbuilding. He has successfully represented appellants in a watershed Competition Appeal Board matter where the CCS was adjudged to have failed to establish liability, and has defended parties in 100% of Singapore's international cartel decisions to date, including acting for the successful amnesty applicant in Singapore's first global cartel decision and the successful leniency applicants in subsequent ones. He also acted for the complainant in the investigation against the world's largest soft drinks maker, which received the GCR Behavioural Matter of the Year for Asia-Pacific, Middle East and Africa.

Daren holds an LL.B. (Hons) from the National University of Singapore (Dean's List), where he was awarded the Malayan Law Journal Book Prize. He was called to the Singapore Bar in 1997 and is also a non-practising solicitor of England and Wales (2001). He has worked in Magic Circle London and Brussels competition practices on European Commission and Office of Fair Trading matters.

Ranked as Global Elite Thought Leader for the Asia-Pacific region by Lexology Index: Competition, Daren is described by Chambers Asia-Pacific as "Singapore's top competition lawyer" and is the first and only Singapore competition lawyer to be ranked as Eminent Practitioner. He was named by Global Competition Review as one of the world's most talented competition lawyers in its 40 Under 40 survey, and is the only Southeast Asian lawyer in the history of the list. He is Singapore's first appointed non-governmental advisor to the CCS at the ICN, a commissioned trainer of the ASEAN Experts Group on Competition, and Principal Examiner on competition law for both the Singapore Institute of Legal Education's Foreign Practitioners Examinations and the Singapore Bar Examinations. He was conferred the Public Service Medal (Pingat Bakti Masyarakat) in 2016 and the Public Service Star (Bintang Bakti Masyarakat) in 2022.
